Patient Financial Counselor

The Patient Financial Counselor is accountable for establishing acceptable financial arrangements on assigned patient accounts by way of securing sponsorship from various federal, state, and county agencies, in order to meet the patient’s financial obligation to the health system and ensure reimbursement. Working under general supervision, this role also helps screen patients who are eligible to receive possible financial assistance in order to assist them with their financial obligations.

Essential Job Function

  • Performs initial and follow-up contact for patients without insurance coverage.
  • Screens and counsels patients and/or their family regarding financial eligibility for possible assistance from various federal, state, and county funded programs that provide reimbursement for medical expenses.
  • Reviews patient health history from various sources, determines eligibility for program participation and financial sponsorship.
  • Refers eligible patients to appropriate financial assistance and insurance programs, guides them through application processes, and collaborates across departments for efficient financial counseling and maximum reimbursement.
  • Monitors funding agencies’ application processing and authorization practices to ensure timely and accurate eligibility decisions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Required: Associates Degree

Experience

  • Required: 1 year customer service experience in healthcare or related setting.
  • Preferred: 1 year financial assistance experience in a healthcare setting
