Job Summary

The Community Educator serves as a literacy ambassador and trainer, building community awareness of

Calhoun County’s literacy landscape. This position develops and delivers educational workshops,

professional development opportunities, and community presentations focused on structured literacy,

dyslexia, early literacy development, and educational advocacy. The Community Educator works

collaboratively with schools, healthcare providers, libraries, childcare organizations,

family-serving agencies, and community partners to increase access to literacy resources and

support pathways for children and families.

Essential Functions

• Develop, coordinate, and deliver workshops, presentations and trainings based on SLD Read’s

established curriculums that align with structured literacy practices and the science of reading.

• Customize training content to meet the needs of various audiences and community partners.

• Develop relationships with community organizations to increase awareness of literacy

resources and support services.

• Collaborate with healthcare providers to improve literacy screening, early identification,

referral processes, and family literacy supports.

• Assist in developing pathways that connect families experiencing literacy challenges with

appropriate educational resources and services.

• Collaborate on literacy events, family engagement activities, and community outreach efforts.

• Support organizational efforts to maintain evidence-based practices and continuous learning.

• Represent SLD Read at community meetings, coalitions, and collaborative initiatives.

• Advocate for evidence-based literacy practices and equitable access to literacy supports.

• Assist in the development of new training materials, educational resources, and outreach

strategies.

• Track participation, outcomes, and feedback from trainings and workshops.

• Prepare reports and documentation related to community education activities and grant

requirements.

• Provide 1:1 tutoring to at least one SLD Read student.

• Recruit and assist in training Calhoun County tutors.

• Coordinate tutor/student schedules, tutoring locations and general logistics of tutoring

relationships in Calhoun County

• Identify emerging community needs and opportunities for partnership development.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, Bachelor’s degree preferred.

• Experience delivering presentations, trainings or educational workshops.

• Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects/tasks at once – set priorities, develop a

personal schedule, record goals and track progress.

• Problem solver – able to assess issues and identify their causes, generate solutions and make

recommendations/decisions when appropriate.

• Attention to detail – read and comprehend information in work-related procedural documents.

• Strong record-keeping and documentation abilities.

• Strong proficiency with computers.
