Job Summary
MPK Advisors & CPAs is seeking an experienced Tax Manager to join our team. Our distinctive approach to public accounting includes a strategic and proactive approach with our clients, bringing unsurpassed value by delivering timely, relevant advice to assist in critical financial decisions.
As Tax Manager, this position will oversee the tax department’s day-to-day operations, ensuring our clients’ compliance with federal, state, and local tax law through accurate, timely, and high-quality return preparation and review. They will lead strategic tax planning engagements that reduce tax liability and add measurable value for individual, business, and nonprofit clients. They will manage and develop tax staff, oversee workflow and deadlines during busy seasons, and serve as a key technical resource and reviewer for the firm. Given our size, this role works in close partnership with firm leadership — balancing hands-on technical work with the supervisory and quality-control responsibilities of managing a team. Our firm takes a unique approach to tax compliance in that we emphasize proactive tax savings strategies, scenario analyses, and advisory services for all entity types, with consideration of our clients' vision, mission, and purpose.

Key Outcomes: (performance)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review and oversee the preparation of federal and various state and local tax returns, ensuring accuracy, technical quality, and timely filing of all tax forms.
- Prepare and review complex individual, corporate, partnership, and tax-exempt organization returns, serving as a final technical reviewer ahead of partner sign-off.
- Find and implement opportunities for process improvement in the firm's tax preparation, review, and workflow procedures.
- Develop and implement strategic tax planning and scenario analysis for individual and business entity clients.
- Manage, train, and mentor staff and senior tax accountants, providing technical guidance as they prepare federal and various state individual, business, and nonprofit tax returns.
- Oversee tax department workload and staff scheduling, conducting performance check-ins and providing input on staff development and annual reviews.
- Manage, deepen, and develop client relationships in the areas of tax and accounting, offering increasing services as it enhances the relationship, value, and outcomes to the clients.
- Meet with clients in person and virtually for tax preparation, return review, and tax planning services.
- Plan for and develop overall return deadlines calendar and coordinate timing and inputs with tax team.
- Maintain effective quality control procedures over all aspects of the tax and accounting processes.
- Manage and facilitate IRS income tax audits: preparing responses, creating schedules, etc.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory tax law developments, communicate the effects of these developments to management and the tax team and create strategies to capitalize on changes to taxation legislation.
- Provide support with special tax projects, research on complex technical issues, and firmwide initiatives as assigned by firm leadership.
- Review quarterly and year-end tax projections for clients, and partner with the accounting team to ensure underlying records are tax-ready ahead of filing deadlines.
- Correspond and coordinate with various tax and audit agencies as required to resolve notices.
- Support the growth of advisory services by identifying client opportunities, contributing to advisory engagements, and participating in business development alongside the partners.
Education/Certification/License Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, economics, or related field (required)
- Active CPA license required. Candidates who are EA-licensed or actively pursuing CPA licensure with significant progress toward completion may be considered. A master’s degree in taxation or accounting is preferred.
Work Experience/Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience (minimum), 7+ years (preferred) in tax and public accounting, including demonstrated experience reviewing returns and supervising staff. Prior management or team-lead experience is required.
- Extensive individual/corporate/partnership tax knowledge required. Nonprofit/tax-exempt organization experience is strongly preferred, given our firm's specialty.
- Strong knowledge of tax code, compliance, and procedures for business entities.
- Understanding of U.S. federal, state, and local reporting requirements.
- Strong experience with a variety of tax operations and ability to drive process improvements.
- Strong ability to utilize project management and accounting best practices to organize and prioritize tasks and the tasks of other tax team members.
- Ability to work well independently as well as through fostering collaboration with key stakeholders, including fellow team members.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Technologies
- Experience with Intuit Lacerte tax and QuickBooks Online accounting software is preferred.
- Experience with Canopy CRM and Holistiplan tax planning software preferred

Note: Occasional travel may be required but is routinely limited.
