Raptor Rehabilitation Lead

POSITION SUMMARY: The Rehabilitation Lead is responsible for supporting the daily care, rehabilitation,

and release of injured and orphaned raptors. This position provides leadership and guidance to

rehabilitation volunteers and interns, helps coordinate patient care activities, and assists with maintaining

high standards of animal welfare and rehabilitation practices.

Animals and Care

• Assist with overseeing animal care through the rehabilitation process

• Maintain high-quality standards of care through the proper upkeep of enclosures.

• Implement approved rehabilitation protocols.

• Collaborate with Rehab Manager to carry out treatment plans.

• Keep accurate and detailed animal health records and oversee documentation of daily animal

care.

• Capable of handling any species of raptor.

• Ensure that animals are being handled to maximize human and animal safety and that

staff/interns/volunteers are trained in and following safety procedures.

Teamwork

• Keep the Rehab Manager appraised of animal care needs in a timely manner.

• Assist with training, mentoring, and evaluating rehabilitation volunteers and interns.

• Serve as a resource for volunteers and interns regarding rehabilitation protocols and patient care.

• Help coordinate daily volunteer and intern assignments to ensure patient care needs are met.

Administration

• Identify maintenance needs for outdoor flight cages and communicate them to the Rehab

Manager in a timely fashion.

• Responsible for volunteer/staff training.

• Monitor rehabilitation supply needs and communicate shortages in a timely manner.

• Assist with maintaining training materials and standard operating procedures.

Professionalism

• Use all hospital equipment appropriately and safely, follow appropriate guidelines and protocols,

and obtain needed training. Equipment includes X-rays, diagnostic machines, a centrifuge,

anesthesia machines, etc.

• Maintain all outside rehabilitation areas clean and well-organized.

• Communicate professionally with members of the public, transporters, veterinarians, and partner

organizations.

• Be a positive representation of the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center at all times.

Secondary Responsibilities

• In collaboration with the Maintenance Manager, assist with maintenance projects in the outdoor

caging.

• Assist with special projects related to rehabilitation, facility improvements, and program

development.

• Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS

• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with the public,

law enforcement, regulators, veterinarians, and others.

• Excellent organizational, detail, planning, and time management skills.

• Self-motivated, able to work independently with limited supervision and as a member of a team.

• Ability to multi-task, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and re-prioritize as needed.

• Proactive approach in resolving problems with a positive outlook.

• A working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and experience with or ability to learn

RaptorMed.

• Skills related to training, coaching, and mentoring personnel are highly desirable.

• Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to motivate and support volunteers and interns in a

fast-paced environment.

• Previous experience supervising, training, or mentoring volunteers, interns, or staff preferred.

• Experience handling and restraining raptors in a rehabilitation setting preferred.

• Ability to work flexible hours during peak rehabilitation season.

QUALIFICATIONS

• A passion for Blackland Prairie Raptor Center’s mission and an interest in conservation.

• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field is preferred.

• One year of professional rehabilitation experience in wildlife rehabilitation with raptors

preferred.

• Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds safely.

• Must be legally entitled to work in the USA.

• Must be able to perform humane euthanasia on a regular and routine basis as well as personally

and professionally handle the emotional aspects of euthanasia.

• Must be able to read, write, and speak clearly in English so that written and verbal instructions

can be given and followed.

• Must be able to work in indoor and outdoor environments.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds safely.

• Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended

periods.

• Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.

• Must be able to safely handle live prey items and deceased animals.

• Frequently utilizes fine manipulation of the fingers and hands to calibrate food preparation tools

and equipment, general animal care tools and equipment, and clinical medical equipment, and

operate computer workstations for up to 4 hours daily.
