Junior Mortgage Banker - Bridgeport (Bilingual)

Newtown Savings Bank is seeking a results-oriented, bilingual (fluent English and Spanish required) sales professional with ties to the Bridgeport market for the role of Junior Mortgage Banker. The candidate selected for the role will enter our Mortgage Banker Training Program.

The Mortgage Banker Training Program is designed to expose the Trainee to Bank policies/procedures, mortgage regulations, and sales techniques to become a strong Mortgage Banker. Once the skills of the training program have been satisfied the trainee will be expected to build a referral base by networking with key players within the real estate and mortgage industry.

The training program is approximately 12 months in duration depending upon the accumulated knowledge and measurable readiness of the participant to take on added responsibilities. The program provides a combination of self-study, on the job training and outside course work as they become available.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

PHASE I (Month One through Month Three):

Working closely with the Vice President, Residential Lending Sales Manager:

  • Develop a basic understanding of the Bank’s mortgage process, systems, and underwriting policy and procedures.
  • Develop a basic working knowledge of the mortgage process from application to close.
  • Become familiar with the credit process and approval process including understanding key concepts including loan-to-value (LTV) and debt-to-income (DTI).
  • Become knowledgeable with all types of income sources including understanding personal and business tax returns. Need to be familiar with: Self Employed Borrowers including Sole Proprietors/LLCs, Partnerships and Corporations, Salary based employees including hourly, bonus, and overtime income, Social Security and Retirement Income, Rental Income, etc.
  • Become familiar with loan programs and loan pricing through both EPPS and daily rate sheet for both 1st and 2nd mortgages.

PHASE II (Month Four through Month Six)

  • Begin to take basic applications with the assistance of the VP, Residential Lending Sales Manager.
  • Understand the online mortgage application process.
  • Become familiar with mortgage insurances options, FHA Loans, Investor Loans, First Time Homebuyer loans, VA Loans, CHFA Loans, HELOC/HELOAN products and down payment assistance programs.

PHASE III (Month Seven – Month Twelve)

  • Begin to develop a referral networking base by calling on local realtors and attorneys, becoming involved in local realtor associations, attending realtor functions, caravans and other opportunities as they present themselves.
  • Ensure adherence to all loan policies and underwriting guidelines during the training program.
  • Demonstrate ability to attract a new client and close a loan from application to close.
  • Attend Sales Training programs as determined by the VP, Residential Lending Sales Manager including training for cross-selling, closing the loan, and customer service.
  • Continue to identify mortgage options for potential clients and apply the knowledge learned throughout the program.
  • Be able to complete at least 5 loans during phase III and receive positive feedback after closing.

Final

  • As a final review, VP, Residential Lending Sales Manager, will review completed final progress and determine if additional training is necessary.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • College Degree in accounting, finance, or business preferred, or two years of relevant experience in sales, banking, financial services, or a related field with transferable skills.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ sales experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, function independently after training, and meet deadlines, while dealing effectively with a wide cross section of people is essential.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer literate, detail oriented, and self-motivated.
  • Bilingual required (fluent English and Spanish, Portuguese a plus)
