Senior Research Scientist / Research Engineer
PFASolve Inc
Company: PFASolve Inc.
Location: Newark / New Brunswick, NJ (Hybrid / Field-Based)
Position Type: Full-Time
Experience Level: Senior-Level (Ph.D. preferred)
Our Mission: Solving the "Forever Chemical" Crisis
At PFASolve Inc., we aren’t just treating water; we are safeguarding the future. PFAS ("forever chemicals") represent one of the greatest environmental challenges of our generation. We are dedicated to developing scalable, economically viable, and breakthrough technologies for the detection, capture, and destruction of these persistent pollutants.
By joining PFASolve, you will be at the forefront of environmental stewardship, transitioning cutting-edge science from the lab into the field to protect communities and ecosystems worldwide.
The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated, hands-on Senior Research Scientist or Engineer to lead the development and commercialization of our next-generation PFAS technologies. You will bridge the gap between concept and deployment, designing experimental programs, synthesizing novel materials, and leading pilot-scale studies.
This is a high-impact, "wearer of many hats" role in a fast-paced startup environment. You will report directly to the leadership team and collaborate with multidisciplinary experts in chemistry, materials science, and water engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Innovate & Execute: Design and optimize laboratory, bench-scale, and pilot-scale PFAS treatment studies.
- Adsorption Mastery: Conduct experiments using activated carbon, ion exchange resins, nanoparticles, and novel engineered adsorbents.
- Scale-Up: Design and perform RSSCT (Rapid Small-Scale Column Testing), breakthrough analysis, and media performance evaluations to transition technologies to the field.
- Material Science: Synthesize and characterize nanomaterials for detection and destruction applications (utilizing SEM, TEM, XPS, etc.).
- Analytical Leadership: Perform PFAS sample prep and analysis using EPA Methods (537.1, 533, 1633) and troubleshoot LC-MS/MS systems.
- Field Engagement: Conduct investigations and sampling at municipal water utilities and industrial sites.
- Strategic Growth: Support patent filings, grant proposals, and technical presentations to regulatory agencies and partners.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. Preferred in Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. (Master's with 3–5+ years of high-level industry/research experience will be considered).
- PFAS Expert: Strong understanding of PFAS chemistry, environmental fate, and current regulatory landscapes.
- Lab-to-Field Pro: Hands-on experience with column testing (RSSCT), adsorption studies, and water treatment processes.
- Analytical Powerhouse: Proficient in operating LC-MS/MS and interpreting complex environmental datasets.
- Communication: Exceptional technical writing and presentation skills; ability to explain complex science to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred "Snazzy" Skills
- Experience with Electrochemical Sensors or microfluidics (Lab-on-a-chip).
- Direct experience working with Municipal Water Utilities or environmental consulting firms.
- Expertise in destruction technologies.
What We Offer
- Real-World Impact: The chance to solve a global environmental crisis.
- Startup Growth: Exposure to IP development and technology commercialization.
- Collaboration: Work directly with leading researchers, regulators, and industry titans.
- Salary: The expected base salary range for this position is $78,000 - $88,000 per year and is to be negotiated based on experience.
- Equity: Competitive salary plus potential equity participation—we want you to own a piece of the solution.
