Overview
We are seeking a Business Systems Analyst / Product Owner to support a high-visibility enterprise data transformation initiative. This role will sit at the center of business, product, data, and engineering teams and will be responsible for bringing clarity, structure, and direction to complex, fast-moving work.
This is not a passive documentation role. The ideal candidate is product-minded, assertive, highly organized, and comfortable working through ambiguity. This person will partner with stakeholders to understand what they are trying to accomplish, challenge unclear or incomplete requirements, identify gaps, and translate business needs into actionable inputs for data engineering teams.
The right candidate will help define and support data products, improve intake and requirements processes, and ensure business and engineering teams stay aligned as the organization modernizes its data platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Gather, clarify, and refine business, product, data, and reporting requirements across cross-functional stakeholders
- Translate vague, incomplete, or ambiguous requests into clear, structured, and actionable requirements
- Guide stakeholders who may not fully understand their needs, desired outcomes, data gaps, or downstream impacts
- Ask thoughtful questions, challenge assumptions, and push back diplomatically when requirements are unclear or misaligned
- Partner closely with data engineers, platform teams, product leaders, analytics teams, and business stakeholders
- Define and organize scope, priorities, dependencies, open questions, assumptions, risks, and blockers
- Act as a bridge between business stakeholders and engineering teams to reduce noise, ambiguity, and rework
- Ensure engineering teams receive well-defined, ready-to-build requirements with clear business context
- Support the development of data products, including datasets, reporting assets, dashboards, pipelines, and platform capabilities
- Help define intake processes, requirement standards, user stories, acceptance criteria, and delivery expectations
- Maintain documentation, including business requirements, functional requirements, process flows, data definitions, user stories, acceptance criteria, and decision logs
- Document what has been discovered, what is still unknown, where teams are blocked, and what decisions are needed
- Work within product-oriented pods aligned to business areas such as finance, marketing, capital markets, servicing, customer operations, or other enterprise functions
- Support parallel workstreams by keeping requirements, priorities, blockers, and stakeholder expectations organized
- Collaborate with technical teams to ensure requirements are feasible, complete, and aligned with platform direction
- Help create structure in a transformation environment where processes, workflows, and operating models are still evolving
Required Qualifications
- Experience as a Business Systems Analyst, Business Analyst, Product Owner, Systems Analyst, Data Analyst, or similar role
- Strong experience gathering, refining, documenting, and managing business and technical requirements
- Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and facilitation skills
- Ability to operate in ambiguous environments and guide unclear conversations toward clarity
- Proven ability to work across technical and non-technical teams
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to track scope, priorities, decisions, dependencies, risks, and blockers
- Ability to write clear user stories, acceptance criteria, requirements documentation, and project artifacts
- Comfortable challenging assumptions and pushing back diplomatically when needed
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to understand business goals and translate them into phased, executable work for engineering teams
- High sense of ownership, urgency, accountability, and follow-through
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting data, analytics, business intelligence, reporting, platform, or engineering teams
- Experience working on data transformation, data modernization, cloud migration, or enterprise platform initiatives
- Exposure to data platforms, data warehouses, data lakes, data marts, pipelines, reporting tools, or analytics environments
- Technical literacy in areas such as SQL, data pipelines, APIs, data modeling, cloud platforms, or data governance
- Experience with Agile methodologies and tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Confluence, or similar platforms
- Experience working in a product-oriented environment or supporting product pods
- Experience with financial, marketing, mortgage, banking, servicing, customer, operational, or enterprise reporting data
- Understanding of data quality, source-of-truth reporting, business metrics, and downstream data usage
- Experience defining intake processes, prioritization frameworks, and delivery roadmaps
- Prior Product Owner experience is highly preferred
What This Role Solves
- Unclear, incomplete, or poorly defined requirements
- Stakeholders who are unsure of what they need or how to articulate it
- Misalignment between business expectations and engineering delivery
- Inefficiencies caused by ambiguous intake, unclear scope, or incomplete documentation
- Lack of structure across fast-moving transformation workstreams
- Engineering teams receiving requests without enough context, priority, or acceptance criteria
- Rework caused by missing data elements, unclear definitions, or misunderstood business goals
What Success Looks Like
- Stakeholders are guided toward clear, actionable, and prioritized requirements
- Engineering teams receive clean, structured, and ready-to-build inputs
- Business goals are translated into phased execution plans
- Requirements, blockers, risks, dependencies, and decisions are clearly documented
- Data products are aligned to real business outcomes and stakeholder needs
- Rework is reduced and delivery efficiency improves
- Business, product, analytics, and engineering teams stay aligned
- The broader transformation effort gains structure, clarity, and momentum
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a product-minded BSA who thinks beyond documentation. They are comfortable stepping into ambiguity, asking the right questions, and helping stakeholders clarify what they actually need. They are not simply taking orders or writing down requests. They are actively shaping requirements, identifying gaps, and helping engineering teams execute effectively.
This person should be confident, organized, and outcome-focused. They should be able to work with senior stakeholders, business users, data engineers, analysts, and product leaders while keeping priorities, dependencies, blockers, and scope clearly organized.
Successful candidates will be assertive without being difficult, detail-oriented without slowing things down, and technical enough to understand how requirements translate into data engineering work. They should bring a strong sense of ownership and be comfortable helping define new ways of working in a fast-moving transformation environment.
