The FairField Center supports individuals and organizations in listening, planning, and interacting more effectively to resolve conflicts. The organization advances dialogue and understanding through education and expert third-party mediation intervention. Its work spans Conflict Resolution, Parent and Mediator training, Restorative Justice, Communication Training, Civic Engagement, and Business Services. FairField Center partners with communities, public institutions, regional courts and private organizations to foster constructive conversations and collaborative decision-making. Team members contribute to initiatives that strengthen relationships and promote equitable, inclusive engagement where all voices are heard.

Role Description

While the Executive Director (E.D.) will eventually become a full-time, on-site role based in Harrisonburg, VA, responsible for overall organizational leadership and strategic direction, currently we are offering this position as 20 hours/week.

Our E.D. oversees program development and delivery. Day-to-day responsibilities include managing staff and contractors, supervising budgets and financial performance, ensuring compliance with policies and funding requirements. The E.D. cultivates relationships with community partners, stakeholders, donors, and clients, and represents the organization at public events, meetings, and outreach activities. This role also involves leading fundraising efforts, reporting to and engaging the Board of Directors, and promoting a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Experience in organizational leadership, including strategic planning, program management, and staff supervision.
  • Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution, mediation, restorative justice, or related fields.
  • Strong communication abilities, including public speaking, facilitation, and relationship-building with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in budgeting, financial oversight, grant management, and fundraising activities.
  • Background in nonprofit management is highly beneficial.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, make data-informed decisions, and maintain clear documentation and reporting.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed, culturally responsive practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (such as nonprofit management, conflict studies, public administration, social sciences) or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience in a leadership role within a nonprofit, community organization, or mission-driven enterprise preferred.
