LaBella is seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer to help lead complex environmental investigation, remediation, and redevelopment projects while supporting the continued growth of our New York City environmental practice.
This is a high-visibility opportunity for an experienced Professional Engineer who brings strong technical judgment, remedial design expertise, client-service instincts, and an entrepreneurial interest in helping grow a regional practice. The successful candidate will play a key role in leading technically complex projects, mentoring staff, strengthening client relationships, supporting business development, and helping shape LaBella’s remediation and environmental engineering platform in the NYC metropolitan area.

This role is ideal for a senior environmental engineer who wants to combine technical leadership, project delivery, client development, and team-building. The successful candidate will lead environmental investigation and remediation projects, including NYSDEC Brownfield Cleanup Program projects, NYC E-Designation projects, Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, remedial investigations, alternatives analyses, remedial designs, construction-phase environmental work, and complex urban redevelopment assignments throughout the five boroughs and the NYC metropolitan area.

Key Responsibilities
Client Service & Business Development
- Build, maintain, and expand strong client relationships across private development, affordable housing, institutional, public-sector, infrastructure, legal, and industrial markets.
- Leverage existing industry relationships and technical credibility to help grow LaBella’s NYC environmental engineering and remediation practice.
- Identify and pursue strategic business development opportunities, including brownfield redevelopment, remedial design, vapor mitigation, PFAS, environmental engineering, expert support, and construction-phase environmental services.
- Prepare and lead proposals, scopes of work, cost estimates, project budgets, qualifications packages, interviews, and responses to RFPs and RFQs.
- Maintain strong working relationships with regulatory agencies, attorneys, developers, contractors, teaming partners, and other project stakeholders.
- Represent LaBella professionally in client meetings, regulatory meetings, industry events, professional organizations, and market-facing activities.
Technical Leadership
- Lead complex environmental investigation and remediation projects, including NYSDEC Brownfield Cleanup Program projects, NYC E-Designation projects, Phase II ESAs, NYSDEC spill sites, remedial investigations, alternatives analyses, remedial designs, and construction-phase environmental work.
- Provide senior technical direction on remedial strategy, engineering controls, vapor intrusion mitigation, soil management, groundwater remediation, PFAS treatment, in-situ remediation, excavation/off-site disposal, and remedial system performance.
- Lead design and feasibility evaluations for remedial technologies, including excavation and off-site disposal, in-situ chemical oxidation/reduction, thermal remediation, sub-slab depressurization systems, groundwater treatment, PFAS treatment, and other site-specific remedial approaches.
- Develop, review, and optimize engineering controls, remedial system designs, automation, monitoring programs, operation and maintenance plans, and long-term performance monitoring strategies.
- Prepare, review, and manage technical deliverables, including work plans, remedial investigation reports, alternatives analyses, remedial action work plans, remedial design documents, construction specifications, closure reports, and regulatory submittals.
- Oversee field programs, including soil, groundwater, soil vapor, surface water, and remedial construction activities.
- Provide technical review of environmental data, design assumptions, remedial alternatives, cost estimates, construction documentation, and regulatory strategy.
- Support litigation, claims, expert witness, technical advisory, and dispute-related assignments, as needed.
Project Management & Delivery
- Manage complex projects from proposal through investigation, design, implementation, construction, monitoring, and closure.
- Manage scope, schedule, budget, staffing, subcontractors, technical deliverables, client expectations, and regulatory coordination.
- Lead project setup, subcontractor procurement, budget tracking, workflow management, reporting oversight, QA/QC review, and client communication.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, including environmental scientists, engineers, geologists, hydrogeologists, planners, contractors, laboratories, drillers, attorneys, developers, and regulatory agencies.
- Communicate project status, risks, technical findings, budget considerations, schedule issues, and recommendations clearly to clients, regulators, and internal leadership.
- Conduct and oversee work in accordance with professional standards, applicable regulations, LaBella’s QA/QC policies, and the firm’s core values.
Team Development & Practice Growth
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, project managers, and field staff.
- Promote technical excellence, practical problem-solving, collaboration, accountability, and professional growth within the team.
- Support recruiting, onboarding, training, technical development, and staff retention efforts for the Brooklyn environmental practice.
- Help identify technical service-line growth opportunities, staffing needs, training needs, and strategic investments to strengthen LaBella’s NYC remediation and environmental engineering capabilities.
- Contribute to the continued growth of LaBella’s NYC environmental practice through strong technical leadership, client service, project delivery, and business development.
Salary Range: $165,000 – $200,000
Salary will be commensurate with experience, technical qualifications, professional licensure, client-management experience, business-development capabilities, remedial design expertise, and relevant New York City / New York State environmental consulting experience.
Requirements
Required Education & Qualifications
- B.S. degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- New York State Professional Engineer license required.
- Approximately 15+ years of professional environmental consulting experience, with significant experience managing environmental investigation, remediation, remedial design, and construction-phase environmental projects.
- Demonstrated experience with NYSDEC Brownfield Cleanup Program projects, Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, remedial investigations, alternatives analyses, remedial design, and remedial implementation.
- Strong technical knowledge of soil, groundwater, soil vapor, vapor intrusion, remedial systems, engineering controls, and construction-phase environmental compliance.
- Experience preparing and reviewing proposals, work plans, remedial investigation reports, alternatives analyses, remedial action work plans, design documents, specifications, closure reports, and regulatory submittals.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex projects, including scope, schedule, budget, staffing, subcontractors, technical deliverables, regulatory coordination, and client communication.
- Strong client communication, client management, and client-service skills, with the ability to develop trusted relationships and support new work.
- Experience mentoring, developing, and providing technical guidance to engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, project managers, and field staff.
- Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, presentation, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Highly motivated self-starter with sound professional judgment, technical credibility, and the ability to lead projects and teams in a fast-paced consulting environment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid NYS or NJ driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to travel to project sites and client meetings within the five boroughs and NYC metropolitan area.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, or a related field.
- Experience with NYC E-Designation projects, NYSDEC Spill Program projects, Superfund/CERCLA sites, and complex urban redevelopment projects.
- Demonstrated seller-doer experience, including client development, repeat work, proposal leadership, and/or new revenue generation.
- Experience with in-situ remediation, thermal remediation, PFAS treatment, vapor mitigation, engineering controls, groundwater treatment, remedial system optimization, automation, and long-term monitoring.
- Established relationships within the NYC real estate, affordable housing, public agency, institutional, infrastructure, industrial, legal, or redevelopment markets.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to visit and oversee work at active construction, redevelopment, remediation, and environmental project sites.
- Ability to perform and/or oversee outdoor field work, as needed.
- Ability to travel locally for project meetings, client meetings, field visits, regulatory meetings, and industry events.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds at a time, as needed.
