About the Role Turning Point Tool is seeking a highly skilled Moldmaker to support the build, repair, debugging, and final assembly of precision molds and tooling used in high-tolerance manufacturing applications. This role requires strong hands-on experience in mold construction and troubleshooting, with the ability to independently diagnose issues, implement repairs, and ensure tools are production ready.
The ideal candidate is a problem-solver with extensive mold knowledge, capable of working through complex tool issues from sampling through final approval. This role also requires strong communication and leadership skills to support and guide other mold makers, apprentices, and machine operators as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Mold Building, Repair & Debugging
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex injection molds and tooling
- Support new tool debugging after sampling and identify root causes of issues
- Complete final fitting, finishing, and assembly of new molds and tooling
- Perform precision adjustments to ensure molds meet dimensional and functional requirements
- Work on urgent breakdowns and scheduled mold maintenance/repair work
Design & CAD Collaboration
- Utilize SolidWorks to review and interpret mold designs and engineering models
- Collaborate with engineering and design teams on tool modifications and improvements
- Provide feedback on design-for-manufacturability and tooling improvements
Planning, Coordination & Scheduling
- Schedule and coordinate mold repairs, builds, and assembly work based on production timelines and customer requirements
- Prioritize workload to meet delivery commitments and minimize downtime
- Communicate status updates and risks to engineering and production leadership
Leadership & Training
- Instruct and mentor other mold makers and apprentices on mold assembly and repair techniques
- Provide hands-on guidance to machine operators supporting mold-related work
- Lead by example in craftsmanship, quality standards, and safety practices
Manufacturing Support
- Support machining, fitting, and assembly activities as needed
- Work cross-functionally with CNC Machinists, EDM operators, and Quality teams
- Assist in prototype, development, and production tooling projects
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Extensive mold making experience (tool & die, injection mold building, or equivalent precision tooling background)
- Strong ability to diagnose and repair complex molds and tooling
- Experience in mold debugging, fitting, and final assembly
- Proficiency in SolidWorks for design interpretation and collaboration
- Strong understanding of precision machining and manufacturing processes
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
Preferred Qualifications
- Mastercam experience
- EDM experience (Wire EDM and/or Sinker EDM)
- CNC machining background
- Experience training or supervising other mold makers or machine operators
- Experience in injection molding environments
- Exposure to ISO-certified manufacturing environments
- Technical certification, apprenticeship, or journeyman-level training in mold making or tool & die
Compensation Hourly Rate: $30.00 – $40.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
