Northern Virginia Performing Arts (NOVAPA) is seeking an experienced, creative, and highly organized Director of Education to lead our growing educational programming.
This is an exciting opportunity for an educator and/or theatre professional who enjoys building programs, mentoring instructors, directing productions, and creating exceptional experiences for students of all ages.
This position can begin immediately and is offered as an independent contractor with the possibility of transitioning to a full-time leadership role based on performance and organizational growth.
Compensation: Negotiable based on experience, attitude, and willingness to grow
What You'll Do
As Director of Education, you will provide leadership for NOVAPA's educational programming, including:
- Lead and oversee all educational programs, classes, camps, and conservatory productions
- Supervise instructors, directors, choreographers, music directors, and production staff
- Recruit, hire, onboard, and evaluate teaching artists and contractors
- Develop curriculum and educational programming throughout the year
- Plan and oversee annual summer camps and seasonal theatre productions
- Direct, choreograph, or serve as Technical Director for one production each trimester
- Coordinate production schedules, rehearsal calendars, and educational events
- Collaborate with executive leadership on strategic planning, budgeting, and program growth
- Build relationships with schools, community organizations, and families
- Support student recruitment and marketing initiatives
- Communicate regularly with families through newsletters and program updates
- Coordinate volunteers, interns, and student leadership opportunities
- Help plan the 2027–2028 educational season and future program expansion
- Utilize technology and digital tools to improve communication, scheduling, and program management
We're Looking For Someone Who
- Has experience leading educational theatre or performing arts programs
- Has experience directing, choreographing, music directing, or technical theatre
- Enjoys mentoring instructors and supervising teams
- Is highly organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Communicates professionally with families, staff, and community partners
- Is passionate about youth arts education
- Works independently while collaborating with leadership
- Is comfortable using Google Workspace and other various technology platforms
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Theatre, Theatre Education, Performing Arts, Education, or a related field
- Experience managing productions from planning through performances
- Experience supervising staff or contractors
- Experience with camps, conservatories, or youth performing arts organizations
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
