The Planet Earth Challenge is seeking an enthusiastic, dependable individual to serve as both the driver and presenter for our Mobile Weather Lab. This unique position combines driving our educational weather bus with engaging elementary and middle school students through hands-on weather and Earth science experiences. If you enjoy working with children, traveling to schools, and making science exciting, this may be the perfect opportunity.
Position Overview
As a Mobile Weather Lab Driver & Presenter, you will safely transport our weather bus to schools throughout New Jersey and surrounding areas while helping facilitate educational experiences for students. The successful candidate will be organized, dependable, and comfortable speaking with groups of children.
Compensation
$45 Per Hour
- Clock-in time begins when you start the bus and depart the depot.
- Clock-out time occurs when the bus is returned to the depot lot at the end of the day.
- All travel time associated with school visits is compensated.
- Overnight travel expenses, when required, will be reimbursed.
Performance Bonus
Earn a $500 end-of-semester bonus.
Employees are eligible for a $500 bonus at the conclusion of each school semester if they:
- Maintain excellent punctuality and arrive on time for all scheduled school visits.
- Successfully fulfill the responsibilities and expectations of the position.
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a positive attitude throughout the semester.
Bonus eligibility and performance evaluations are determined by The Planet Earth Challenge management team based on attendance, performance, and overall job performance.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate The Planet Earth Challenge Mobile Weather Lab.
- Drive to schools, museums, libraries, camps, and special events.
- Assist with presenting weather and Earth science programs to students.
- Manage the daily tour schedule and maintain 15-minute student rotation cycles.
- Ensure student groups transition efficiently throughout the day.
- Arrive at schools promptly and maintain the scheduled itinerary.
- Represent The Planet Earth Challenge professionally with teachers, administrators, parents, and students.
- Communicate with program staff regarding schedules, travel, and logistics.
- Help create a positive, engaging, and memorable experience for every student who visits the bus.
Qualifications
Required
- Must reside in Somerset, Mercer, Middlesex, or Monmouth County, NJ.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Comfortable driving a vehicle approximately 30 feet long and 8 feet wide.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Dependable, punctual, and self-motivated.
- Friendly, professional, and student-focused attitude.
- Comfortable speaking with elementary and middle school students.
- Ability to work independently and manage the flow of the day.
Preferred
- Experience driving larger vehicles, buses, RVs, box trucks, or commercial vehicles.
- Experience working with children in educational, coaching, camp, or youth programs.
- Public speaking or presentation experience.
- Background in education, science, museums, camps, or youth programming.
No CDL is required.
No meteorology degree is required.
Schedule
- Flexible hours during the school year.
- Most programs occur on weekdays during normal school hours.
- Typical travel radius is within two hours of Central New Jersey.
- Occasional weekend events may occur.
- Rare overnight trips to school districts, with all approved expenses reimbursed.
