Position Summary
The Dishwasher cleans trays, dishes, kitchen, food preparation and serving equipment, and utensils. This person is expected to behave in a manner that demonstrates our Core Values: radically inclusive, just and loving, exemplary customer service, outstanding job performance, peaceful problem resolution, and respectful client management. Work responsibilities will, at times, require long days and/or evening or weekend responsibilities. Excellent attendance is required with schedule flexibility determined by agency needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Work in collaboration with others to ensure efficient operations.
- Wash dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, and/or pans using dishwasher, or by hand.
- Place clean dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment in storage areas.
- Transfer supplies and equipment between storage and work areas, by hand or using hand carts/truck.
- Maintain the dish machine, booster and temperature log. Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment.
- Maintain work areas, equipment, and utensils in clean and orderly condition throughout the day.
- Clear and reset counters and tables at conclusion of shift. Clean and sanitize dishwashing areas and tray receiving areas (counter tops and bottom shelves), sweep and mop floors, take out garbage and replace bags in garbage cans.
- Sort and remove trash, placing it in designated pickup areas. Clean garbage cans with water or steam. Ensure all Daily Free Meals Program workers are following the correct procedures of the Recycling Program;
- Follow the Daily Free Meals Program’s Health & Safety rules at all times.
- The ability to accurately adhere to sanitation testing and logs requirements daily.
- Do all required GLIDE and State training as mandated.
Minimum Qualifications
- The job requires being reliable, accountable and able to fulfill responsibilities.
- Flexible and accommodating.
- Ability to work under constant pressure to serve meals quickly, while ensuring quality is maintained, and safety and sanitation guidelines are observed.
- Hold a valid California food handlers' card.
- Excellent interpersonal skills. Job requires being pleasant with others on the job and displaying a good-natured, cooperative attitude.
- Exercises sound judgment in interactions with others. Must be able to deal with difficult individuals (e.g., angry, loud and/or verbally abusive) in a skilled manner.
- Ability to respond to high intensity situations and to handle crises. Job requires maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.
- Has the ability to work effectively across cultures. Demonstrates a commitment to learning, communicating and working respectfully with people different from themselves.

Physical Requirements
- Vision corrected in normal range;
- Hearing corrected in normal range. Ability to communicate effectively in a manner which can be understood by those with whom the person is speaking;
- Must be in good physical condition, as this person will be required to perform manual labor within conditions that are sometimes less than ideal. Ability to perform repetitive physical activities (for up to 8 hours per day) that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body such as bending, twisting, lifting, and walking;
- Trunk strength. The ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles repeatedly or continuously over time without ‘giving out’ or fatiguing;
- Ability to stand for extended periods, 90% of time standing and 10% sitting. Ability to move about and to move quickly to address emergency or potentially dangerous situations. Must possess strength, stamina and ability to climb multiple flights of stairs safely and repeatedly. Ability to navigate stairs with heavy loads in hands or with equipment throughout the work day;
- Use hands and arms to handle, position and move materials, and manipulate things on a constant basis for up to 8 hours;
- Frequent lifting of food containers, foodstuff, and pots weighing up to 50 pounds is required. Must possess the ability to independently and safely lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for extended periods (up to 1 hour) and heavier weights with the use of equipment or assistance from others.
This is a fulltime (40 hour/week), Non-Exempt position.
Work Environment
GLIDE’s buildings are located in the Tenderloin neighborhood. GLIDE maintains an "open door" policy to the community and its clients, who frequently enter and leave the building.
This role is covered by the collective bargaining agreement.
