Underdog Sports Leagues is hiring part-time Flag Football Referees to work our adult 21+ flag football leagues in Portland.

We pay $23.50/hour, offer a flexible part-time schedule, and offer an education benefit: eligible staff can earn $500 toward college tuition, student loan debt, or a child’s 529 education savings plan after working 100 hours in a calendar year.

You do not need previous refereeing experience. Underdog trains and certifies our own referees on our rules, mechanics, and procedures. But this is not a “learn football from scratch” role. You should already have a solid understanding of football and be comfortable making calls in real time.

This is an active role for someone who knows the game, communicates clearly, and can confidently manage an adult recreational flag football game. You’ll be responsible for keeping games moving, making calls, communicating with players, and helping create a safe, fair, and fun experience. You need to be comfortable being the authority on the field in a friendly, approachable way. You should be confident, but not arrogant.

Our flag football leagues run year-round on nights and weekends.

Schedule Details

This is a part-time position, generally 5–20 hours per week.

Flag football games are scheduled on the hour. Games are on weekends and generally include 3–5 games.

We work with complicated schedules. You tell us when you’re available, and we work around that. We have room for people who want one shift a week and for people who want as many hours as possible.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for dependable, outgoing people who know football and are comfortable taking ownership of a game.

You should be:

• Reliable and punctual
• Comfortable being the person in charge on the field
• Confident making calls and rulings
• Able to communicate clearly with players and captains
• Able to diffuse conflict without escalating it
• Able to relate to and empathize with players
• Proactive, not reactive
• Comfortable moving throughout the game. Our referees do not just stand in one spot — they are constantly moving with the play and may cover 1–2 miles per game
• Friendly, but able to be firm when needed
• Proud of doing a good job
• Able to enjoy facilitating other people’s fun

We believe dependability is an ability. If you are not dependable, you will not make it with us.

You do not need official refereeing experience, but you do need real football knowledge. We’ll train you on Underdog rules, systems, mechanics, and procedures, but you should already understand the game well enough to make calls, explain rulings, and be an authority on the field.

You also must:
