Job Summary

As an important team member of a non-profit organization in Oakland County dedicated to lifting adult literacy and numeracy levels, the Adult Basic Education/GED Program specialist will manage a caseload of adult learners and volunteer tutors to help learners obtain high-school equivalency degrees, career readiness skills, or personal literacy and numeracy goals that can prove life-changing. This year-round, 22-hour-per-week position requires a valid Michigan teaching certificate and offers a 25% work-from-home option.

Student Support Functions

  • Make outreach presentations and build referral partnerships to recruit learners in the high-need cities of Oakland County
  • Conduct goal-setting conversations & develop learning plans for new students who complete 30-day trial period
  • Identify barriers to participation and refer to community resources
  • Check-in regularly with learners to support persistence and academic achievement
  • Encourage transition to GED, employment, or workforce programs

Program Development & Instructional Functions

  • Train volunteer tutors, match them with students, and monitor the progress toward academic achievement
  • Suggest curriculum and instructional strategies to tutors
  • Organize supplemental small-group instruction such as bootcamps w/instructors on an independent contract basis
  • Analyze data to assess program effectiveness trends, improve learner retention strategies, and ensure outcome targets are met
  • Supervise Adult Basic Education Program Coordinator, who is fielding call from interested students, managing student intake, and collecting data.

  • Experience, comfort, and fluency with productivity tools. OLC uses Microsoft Office 365 productivity tools (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word), the Zoho customer relationship (CRM) database, online learning platforms, and AI tools to improve efficiency.

Hours/Benefits

  • 22 hours/week
  • Hybrid schedule: 75% of work hours at the Pontiac location or representing OLC in the community; 25% can be remote.
  • At least 50% of the work hours must occur during regular office hours of 8:30 am – 6 pm Monday through Thursday and Saturday.
  • Occasional evening/Saturday mornings are expected.
