Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced investigative reporter to join our award-winning newsroom. This position will focus on long-term reporting and emphasizes research and interviewing for comprehensive stories affecting the community.
This is not a “daily beat” position but one that focuses on takeout-type stories and investigative pieces.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of uncovering and reporting important stories. This role requires a strong commitment to public service journalism, a deep understanding of investigative reporting techniques and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth investigations into issues of public concern, including but not limited to:
- Government overwatch
- Environmental issues
- Social justice and inequality
- Develop and execute investigative plans, including:
- Gathering and analyzing documents, data, and other evidence
- Conducting interviews with sources
- Utilizing public records requests and other investigative tools
- Write compelling and well-researched articles, reports, and multimedia presentations that clearly and concisely communicate findings to the public.
- Collaborate with other reporters and editors to develop and execute investigative projects.
- Represent the Marietta Daily Journal at community events and forums.
- Maintain a strong understanding of ethical journalism practices and adhere to all relevant laws and regulations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
- At least 3-5 years of experience as an investigative or enterprise reporter.
- Conduct in-depth investigations and produce high-quality journalism.
- Gather and analyze information from various sources, including public records, databases, and interviews.
- Write clear, concise, and engaging prose.
- Meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Build and maintain relationships with sources.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in using data analysis and reporting tools.
- Experience with multimedia storytelling is a plus.
Salary: $45,000 to $60,000 depending on experience
