Transportation Engineer Tech I
Performs basic drafting, calculations and field work; learns basic design procedures and techniques. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer Tech II
Performs intermediate drafting and calculations and basic design work; performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor
Essential Duties
Transportation Engineer Tech I
- Performs basic design work
- Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments.
- Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
- Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer Tech II include all the above and:
- Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
- Performs intermediate design work.
- Prepares field notes.
- Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
- Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
- Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
- Works on reproduction of plans.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Engineer Tech I
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience: No experience required.
Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license at time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Transportation Engineer Tech II
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience: 3 years drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license at time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Competencies
Transportation Engineer Tech I
Some knowledge of:
- Basic roadway design
- Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
- Higher mathematics
Proficient skill in:
- Performing basic design and drafting
- Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Ability to:
- Follow verbal and written instructions
Transportation Engineer Tech II: include all the above and:
Considerable knowledge of:
- Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures
- Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
- Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments
- Higher mathematics
- Interactive graphic and design information systems
Proficient skill in:
- Performing intermediate drafting
- Writing and revising standards and procedures
- Performing basic design and drafting
- Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
- Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Ability to:
- Follow verbal and written instructions
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
- Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
