Essential Functions

City Planner I

  • Process use-by-right building permits, including commercial, industrial, multi-family, and other residential uses in determining conformance with city regulations and general planning principles.
  • Perform field inspections to determine compliance of site improvements with approved plans.
  • Review various planning applications and construction drawings for compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Coordinate, facilitate and/or attend neighborhood meetings and assist as applicable in negotiating acceptable solutions to neighborhood concerns and issues relative to land use and development applications and proposals.
  • Prepare staff reports recommending actions to be taken by the Zoning Board of Adjustment and Planning Commission, and provide oral and graphic presentations in support of staff reports.
  • Coordinate the processing of development proposals (including subdivision, site development plan and variance requests) with other city departments.
  • Maintain clear communication with applicants, providing guidance to facilitate compliance with city regulations and good planning practice and timely project completion,
  • Interpret and explain provisions of the city code, applicable laws and regulations and other policies and standards to the public, applicants, city officials and other city staff.
  • Provide high quality customer service to various internal and external customers.
  • Conduct a variety of planning research activities and assist in the development and presentation of various plans policies and studies as assigned.
  • Provide assistance as needed to other city offices in furthering design and planning objectives.

City Planner II

  • Prepare staff reports recommending actions to be taken by the Zoning Board of Adjustment, Planning Commission and City Council, and provide oral and graphic presentations in support of staff reports.
  • Receive and coordinate the processing of development applications (including annexation, zoning, subdivision, and variance requests) in coordination with other city departments.
  • Maintain clear communication with applicants, providing guidance to facilitate compliance with City regulations, good planning practice and timely project completion.
  • Interpret and explain provisions of the City Code, applicable laws and regulations, and other policies and standards to the public, applicants, City officials, and other City staff.
  • Provide high-quality customer service to various internal and external customers.
  • Conduct a variety of planning research activities including the development of revised regulations which implement policies of the Comprehensive Master Plan and good urban planning practice.
  • Provide urban design analysis in facilitating policy and regulatory improvements.
  • Provide assistance as needed to other City offices in furthering design and planning objectives.
  • Serve as chairperson or liaison to various committees as assigned.
  • Perform field inspections to determine compliance of site improvements with approved plans.
  • Review various planning applications and construction drawings for compliance with established standards and regulations.
  • Assist in the development and presentation of various plans, policies and studies as assigned.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and/or attend neighborhood meetings and assists as applicable in negotiating acceptable solutions to neighborhood concerns and issues relative to land use and development applications and proposals.

Other Job Functions

  • Participates in organization-wide committees, focus groups and work teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

Required: Bachelor's Degree in Urban or Regional Planning or closely related field.

Preferred: Graduate Degree in Urban or Regional Planning or closely related field

Experience

City Planner I

  • 1 year experience in the field of urban planning, preferably in development review required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and or experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

City Planner II

  • 3 years experience in the field of urban planning. A Master's degree may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • 1 year of experience in development review required.

Certifications

  • Must possess valid driver's license
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is desirable.
