Job Details

The Publications Department oversees a robust program of scholarly catalogues, quarterly museum member magazines, brochures, and other campus-wide print materials. Under the direction of the Director of Publications, this position works cross-institutionally, and with outside collaborators/contractors, to deliver publications and printed materials of the highest quality, furthering the reputation of the Cleveland Museum of Art as a standard in excellence.

As part of the Exhibition, Design, and Publications Division, this position, on occasion, will provide additional graphics support to the Design & Experience Department, which may include designing in-gallery labels and didactics or other environmental graphics projects.

Requirements And Key Competencies

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2-3 years experience designing scholarly publications and other print materials.

Must be highly motivated, ability to work on complex projects simultaneously, prioritize work projects in a fast-paced environment, possess a keen eye for detail and accuracy, and successfully collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

Experience with desktop publishing software (Adobe Creative Suite--Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) is required, knowledge of digital publishing a plus. Experience working in a museum or cultural institution a plus.

A design portfolio is required for consideration.

Responsibilities

Design

  • Design scholarly publications by applying knowledge of typography, style sheets, and grid systems;
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the institution to design and produce the museum’s quarterly members magazine, Cleveland Art;
  • Design and provide proofs, special instructions, and digital files for print and digital delivery including publications, the museum website, and online presentations.
  • Apply understanding of the museum’s diverse audiences to produce work that is accessible, inclusive, and equitable.
  • Awareness of current and future design and sustainability trends in graphic design.

  • Strong collaboration skills with a positive, adaptable, and flexible approach that supports productive working relationships across teams.
  • Clear and confident communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present ideas effectively to a variety of stakeholders.

Salary range: $50,000 - $53,000
