Location: Duke Sleep Disorders Center, Durham, NC

Work Schedule: 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM, Monday – Friday

Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of specialized technical and supportive patient care activities to assist medical professional personnel in diagnostic, therapeutic, and research procedures.

Work Performed

Patient Preparation & Care

  • Confer with patients to obtain information for chart and laboratory records.

  • Explain procedures to patients, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.

  • Ensure the completion of patients' laboratory tests prior to examination by a physician.

  • Prepare patients for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, which includes obtaining specimens, taking vital signs and measurements, positioning patients, and attaching equipment leads to specific body locations.

Procedure Assistance & Data Collection

  • Assist physicians and nursing personnel during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including handling instruments, calling out equipment readings, and administering oxygen and opaque dyes.

  • Monitor patients closely and alert the physician to any patient discomfort.

  • Operate specialized equipment such as polygraphs, magnetic and video tape recorders, and X-ray machines to monitor and obtain recordings of specific body functions.

  • Calculate, compile, and record data obtained from graphs and numerical readings.

Laboratory & Equipment Operations

  • Operate manual and automatic laboratory equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analyses of specimens.

  • Calibrate and perform routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning.

  • Clean and sterilize instruments, supplies, and equipment in accordance with safety protocols.

  • Maintain an accurate inventory of clinical supplies and reorder as required.

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Required: Work requires completion of a related 1-year technical school program.

Experience

  • Required: Work generally requires two years of experience in health care specialties related to the specific position.

  • Substitution: Two additional years of related experience may be substituted for the technical school requirement.

  • Note: An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will be considered.
