Office description: The New Jersey Senate Democratic Office provides legal, policy and communications support to the Democratic members of the New Jersey State Senate.

Job Position: Senior Communications Specialist

Salary: $60,000 – 75,000 per year

Workweek: 35 hours per week or more

Position Overview: The ideal candidate will have a passion for promoting the values of Democratic elected officials, interest in working in a fast-paced environment and enjoy writing for different audiences. A candidate should have at least one year of prior communications experience, with internship accepted. In this position, the candidate will be responsible for following New Jersey news and outlets, writing press releases and social media content, and coordinating interviews and press events for senators. Additionally, we are searching for someone who will assist District Offices with press needs and maintain/update local media lists for legislative districts, as appropriate.

Required skills

· Strong writing ability, with experience writing press releases, statements, op-eds, and social media copy. Must be able to break down dense policy language into digestible, reader-friendly content.

· Experience in media relations, including interfacing with reporters, coordinating interviews, and pitching stories to local and national news outlets.

· A comprehensive understanding of social media platforms including Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, and Substack and how to reach target audiences on each.

· Comfortable learning and explaining complex policy issues to reporters.

· Comfortable working under tight deadlines and juggling multiple projects at once.

· Experience working in Canva is a must. Candidates with experience shooting video and photos, and editing in CapCut, Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Premiere will be strongly considered.

· Bilingual candidates, particularly those with oral and written fluency in Spanish, will be strongly considered.

· Flexible schedule, including occasional weekend and after-hours work as needed.
