Under general supervision, the Tax Staff Accountant II performs day-to-day direct tax accounting and compliance activities using established processes and developing tax knowledge. This intermediate-level role prepares tax workpapers, schedules, and assigned federal, state, and local tax filings; analyzes routine tax data; and resolves straightforward issues with increasing independence. The position manages core responsibilities and assigned projects, recommends practical process improvements, and escalates complex matters or significant exceptions appropriately.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Analyze company financial and tax records for assigned income and franchise tax compliance activities.
- Prepare supporting schedules, reconciliations, and calculations for income tax returns, including depreciation and apportionment workpapers.
- Prepare assigned federal, state, and local income and franchise tax returns using tax preparation software and Excel workpapers.
- Gather, summarize, calculate, and explain routine income tax positions for various reporting periods.
- Assist with the preparation of tax provisions, estimates, and related supporting documentation.
- Research routine tax questions, document conclusions, and communicate findings to the manager or senior team members.
- Identify data discrepancies, tax exposures, process issues, or deadline concerns and recommend appropriate next steps.
- Manage assigned tasks and projects, coordinate information requests, and meet established filing and reporting deadlines.
- Collaborate with Direct Tax team members, internal business partners, and external service providers as assigned.
- Maintain organized, accurate, and audit-ready workpapers and supporting documentation.
- Apply established best practices and suggest improvements to recurring work processes.
- Maintain current job knowledge through training, research, professional publications, and educational opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A minimum of two years of income tax, accounting, or related experience is required; pass-through tax experience is preferred.
- Working knowledge of accounting principles, income tax compliance, book-to-tax differences, fixed assets and depreciation, and multi-state income and franchise tax concepts.
- Ability to complete core responsibilities independently, troubleshoot straightforward issues, and escalate complex matters appropriately.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; experience with tax preparation software is preferred.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and produce accurate work under general supervision.
- Strong analytical, research, problem-solving, customer service, and written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively, accept and apply feedback, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate attention to detail.
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field, or equivalent experience, is required.
- Desire to obtain a Master’s degree in Taxation or Accounting and/or Certified Public Accountant designation is encouraged.
Work Days
Normal work days are Monday through Friday. Occasional Saturdays and Sundays may be necessary.
Work Hours
Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additional hours may be necessary.
