Chief Meteorologist

We are seeking an experienced Chief Meteorologist to lead our six-member weather team and serve as the station’s primary on-air authority for weather coverage.

This is a high-profile leadership role requiring exceptional meteorological expertise, strong on-air presence, sound decision-making, and the ability to lead the team through significant and severe weather events. The Chief Meteorologist will oversee daily forecasting, breaking weather coverage, department operations, digital content, and long-term weather planning, including hurricane season.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the station’s primary on-air meteorologist for daily newscasts, special reports, severe weather coverage, and breaking weather events.
• Deliver accurate, compelling, and easy-to-understand forecasts that establish viewer trust.
• Lead coverage of hurricanes, tropical storms, tornadoes, flooding, and other significant weather events from the studio and field as needed.
• Translate complex weather data, radar, models, and forecasting information into clear, actionable information for viewers.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a six-member weather team while overseeing scheduling, performance, workflow, and staffing.
• Coordinate closely with newsroom leadership and producers during severe weather and extended coverage.
• Oversee weather technology, forecasting systems, radar, graphics, and data resources.
• Develop weather content for television, digital platforms, mobile apps, streaming, and social media.
• Help grow the station’s weather brand and digital audience.
• Represent the station at community events, school visits, public appearances, and weather education programs.
• Develop and implement strategic weather coverage plans, particularly for hurricane season.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field.
• Significant experience as an on-air television meteorologist; leadership experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of radar, satellite imagery, computer models, and forecasting technology.
• Proven experience covering severe and breaking weather in a live television environment.
• Excellent on-camera communication, presentation, and storytelling skills.
• Strong leadership, coaching, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
• Ability to remain calm, accurate, and decisive under pressure.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, early mornings, evenings, and extended hours during severe weather events.
