The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and integrity of the company's accounting and financial reporting functions. The position ensures timely and accurate financial reporting, maintains effective accounting processes and internal controls, oversees core accounting operations, and provides meaningful financial analysis to support sound business decisions.
The Controller serves as the company's senior day-to-day accounting and financial-management resource, providing the President and other members of management with accurate financial information, objective analysis, and practical financial guidance.
The Controller is expected to maintain a detailed understanding of the company's financial and accounting activities while developing systems, processes, and staff capabilities that support accurate reporting, appropriate controls, operational efficiency, and continuity. The position works collaboratively with other departments to improve financial visibility, strengthen business processes, and support the company's continued growth.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Leads the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes and ensures timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and management reports.
• Oversees the general ledger and supporting accounting functions, including account reconciliations, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, accruals, prepaid expenses, and other balance-sheet and income-statement accounts.
• Maintains the integrity of accounting records and ensures transactions are recorded accurately, consistently, and in accordance with applicable accounting principles and company policies.
• Oversees manufacturing and cost-accounting activities, including inventory valuation, product and project costing, labor and overhead allocation, cost analysis, margins and related accounting controls.
• Reviews inventory accounting and related processes, including physical inventory activities, inventory reconciliations and identification of excess, obsolete or otherwise impaired inventory.
• Coordinates preparation of the annual operating budget and periodic financial forecasts and provides management with timely analysis of actual results compared with budget, forecast and prior periods.
• Develops and maintains cash-flow and working-capital reporting and provides management with visibility into cash requirements, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory and other significant drivers of working capital.
• Provides the President and other members of management with timely financial analysis regarding revenue, expenses, margins, operating performance, trends and other matters affecting company profitability and financial position.
• Establishes, maintains and periodically evaluates internal accounting controls, approval processes, reconciliations and segregation of duties appropriate to the size and complexity of the organization.
• Identifies accounting, financial and process risks and recommends practical corrective actions or improvements.
• Coordinates preparation of schedules, supporting documentation and other materials required for external financial reviews, audits, tax preparation and regulatory reporting.
• Serves as the primary internal accounting contact for outside auditors, tax professionals and other financial advisers and coordinates timely resolution of questions and requested information.
• Supports the President and other members of management in evaluating accounting, tax, insurance, financial and operational matters and coordinates with outside specialists when appropriate.
• Maintains financial oversight of the payroll process, including appropriate review, reconciliation and accounting controls, and coordinates with Human Resources and the Payroll Administrator regarding payroll-related financial matters.
• Maintains oversight of banking and treasury activities assigned to the Controller, including cash-account reconciliations, authorized transactions, and financial controls. Supports the President in relationships with banks and other financial institutions as requested.
• Oversees accounting for capital assets, including capitalization, depreciation, and appropriate supporting records.
• Evaluates existing accounting and financial systems, reports and workflows and recommends improvements to increase accuracy, efficiency, control and usefulness of financial information.
• Participates in implementation or modification of accounting, ERP, timekeeping, payroll, inventory and related business systems to ensure appropriate financial controls and data integrity.
• Develops and maintains documented accounting policies, procedures, closing schedules, and recurring-process documentation sufficient to provide consistent execution and backup coverage.
• Establishes meaningful Finance and Accounting performance measures and monitors the timeliness, accuracy, and effectiveness of recurring accounting processes.
• Works collaboratively with operations, engineering, sales, Human Resources, and other departments to understand the financial implications of business activities and improve the accuracy and usefulness of financial information.
• Develops Accounting Department employees through clear expectations, appropriate delegation, regular feedback, cross-training, and opportunities for professional growth.
• Delegates recurring transactional accounting activities to appropriately trained staff while maintaining effective review, oversight, and accountability.
Required Education and Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Minimum seven years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including significant responsibility for financial reporting, general ledger accounting, month-end close, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
• Demonstrated experience supervising or leading accounting personnel and establishing accountability for the quality and timeliness of financial work.
• Strong working knowledge of U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
• Demonstrated ability to prepare, analyze, and explain financial statements and financial results to senior management.
• Meaningful experience with accounting processes and controls in an organization of comparable size or complexity.
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, or comparable financial-management experience in a small or mid-sized organization.
• Manufacturing accounting and cost-accounting experience.
• Experience in aerospace, defense, engineering, technology, or another regulated or project-oriented environment.
• Experience with inventory accounting, product costing, and manufacturing ERP systems.
• Experience with government-contract accounting or financial requirements associated with government contracting.
• Experience improving accounting processes, internal controls, or ERP/accounting systems.
• CPA, CMA, or comparable professional certification.
Required Skills and Abilities
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of Word, Outlook, Teams, and other standard business applications.
• Strong working knowledge of ERP and accounting systems, with experience in a manufacturing ERP environment strongly preferred.
• Experience with Aptean Intuitive is helpful but not required.
• Ability to understand detailed accounting information while also identifying broader financial and operational implications.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes rather than merely correct individual transactions.
• Ability to communicate financial information clearly to both financial and nonfinancial audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and recurring deadlines without sacrificing accuracy or control.
• High degree of discretion and demonstrated ability to appropriately handle confidential financial, employee, and business information.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises personnel in accordance with the current organizational structure. Responsibilities include establishing expectations, assigning and reviewing work, providing performance feedback, developing staff capabilities, addressing performance issues, and ensuring appropriate cross-training and backup coverage.
