Gas Turbine Operator
GenSystems Power Solutions
Position Summary
The Gas Turbine Operator is responsible for the safe operation, monitoring, and basic maintenance support of turbine-driven electrical power generation equipment used in oil and gas field operations, including hydraulic fracturing and e-frac applications.
This role helps maintain continuous, reliable power generation by monitoring equipment performance, identifying operational issues, completing routine inspections, and coordinating with maintenance and engineering teams. The operator must follow established operating procedures, safety standards, and site requirements while supporting equipment deployment and field operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor turbine-driven power generation equipment supporting frac, e-frac, and other oil and gas field operations.
- Perform routine equipment inspections, operational checks, and basic maintenance activities to support equipment reliability and availability.
- Monitor operating parameters, generator performance, electrical distribution systems, and equipment alarms.
- Identify abnormal operating conditions, troubleshoot issues within the scope of the role, and communicate concerns promptly to supervisors and maintenance personnel.
- Support equipment startup, shutdown, load management, and operational transitions in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintain accurate operating logs, inspection records, equipment readings, and shift reports.
- Work closely with field operations, maintenance, engineering, and control room personnel to resolve operational issues and minimize downtime.
- Support equipment commissioning, deployment, mobilization, demobilization, and site setup activities.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), permit-to-work requirements, and job safety or hazard analyses (JSA/JHA).
- Participate in safety meetings, incident and near-miss reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while complying with company policies and customer site requirements.
- Ability to monitor generator output, operating parameters, alarms, and changing electrical loads.
- Familiarity with turbine auxiliary systems, such as fuel, lubrication, cooling, and starting systems.
- Ability to recognize abnormal operating conditions and follow established procedures for troubleshooting, escalation, and safe shutdown.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in gas turbine operations, power generation, electrical power distribution, industrial operations, oil and gas field operations, or a related technical environment. Military technical experience may satisfy this requirement based on the candidate's hands-on responsibilities and technical background.
- Oil and gas field experience, preferably in hydraulic fracturing, e-frac, pressure pumping, or related field operations.
- Military technical experience in power generation, propulsion, electrical distribution, or industrial plant operations may be considered in lieu of direct oil & gas experience on a case-by-case basis.
- Experience operating or supporting turbine-driven power generation equipment or industrial electrical power systems.
- Working knowledge of electrical systems, generators, switchgear, transformers, and power distribution.
- Ability to read and interpret basic electrical diagrams, single-line diagrams, and operating procedures.
- Understanding of equipment inspections, operational monitoring, troubleshooting, and safe work practices.
- Willingness to work rotational schedules, including 20 days on/10 days off
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customers’ and project sites as required.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in demanding field environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical certification or vocational training in electrical technology, power generation, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
- U.S. Navy Gas Turbine Systems Technicians (GSE/GSM) and Navy Nuclear-trained personnel with hands-on experience in gas turbines, propulsion, power generation, electrical distribution, or comparable industrial systems is preferred.
- Experience with turbine startup and shutdown procedures, generator synchronization, load management, or electrical power distribution.
- Familiarity with electrical control systems, equipment alarms, and basic condition monitoring.
- Previous experience supporting equipment commissioning, field deployment, or startup activities.
- Knowledge of lockout/tagout (LOTO), permit-to-work systems, JSA/JHA processes, and applicable OSHA safety requirements.
Additional Notes
The Gas Turbine Operator is expected to maintain a strong commitment to safety at all times, protecting themselves, coworkers, customers, and others at the job site. The operator must follow all applicable safety procedures and consistently use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
This position requires working outdoors for the duration of a shift in varying weather conditions, including rain, extreme heat or cold, and high winds. Operators may also be exposed to other environmental conditions typical of oil and gas field operations and the locations where turbine equipment is deployed.
This is 20 days on/10 days off rotational schedule currently located in Midland, TX with potential to be in other parts of the US.
