Embedded Systems Engineer
Greywright Inc
Greywright is hiring an Embedded Systems Engineer to help build out and improve on the onboard computing that connects autonomous vessels' sensors, autonomy software, and vehicle systems. You will work on embedded platforms, integrate sensors and I/O, and build the health monitoring and fail-safes that keep uncrewed craft safe and recoverable.
You will work closely with our GNC, software, electrical, and networks teams, building on our existing vehicle baselines and seeing your work run on real vessels at sea.
Requirements
What you'll do
- Develop and maintain embedded software on onboard vehicle computers, including board support packages, device drivers, boot configuration, and system services.
- Integrate sensors and I/O, including IMUs, GNSS receivers, radar, cameras, and payloads, over interfaces such as Ethernet, CAN, serial, SPI, and I2C.
- Manage time synchronization and timestamping across sensors and compute (e.g., PTP, PPS) so autonomy and GNC receive accurate data.
- Build health monitoring, watchdogs, and fault detection that report system status and trigger safe behavior when components fail.
- Implement fail-safe and degraded-mode behaviors for uncrewed operation with the GNC, autonomy, and systems teams.
- Harden onboard systems, including secure boot, access control, and reliable field software updates.
- Profile and optimize performance, latency, and resource use on constrained hardware.
- Bring up new hardware with the electrical team, and debug issues on the bench, in hardware-in-the-loop setups, and in the field.
- Document interfaces, configurations, and procedures.
What you bring
- B.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of embedded systems experience, including work on fielded hardware.
- Strong C and C++ skills, plus Python or Bash for tooling and automation.
- Hands-on experience developing embedded software, including device drivers, hardware bring-up, and embedded build tools.
- Experience integrating sensors over common interfaces (e.g., Ethernet, CAN, UART, SPI, I2C).
- Experience designing watchdogs, health monitoring, or fault handling for systems that must run unattended.
- Comfort with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and with reading schematics.
- Comfort working in the lab and in the field alongside hardware, software, and test teams.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time when needed.
- This role requires access to ITAR/EAR-controlled data; U.S. person status is required as defined by 22 CFR 120.62.
Nice to have
- Experience with NVIDIA Jetson or similar edge compute platforms.
- Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) on microcontrollers or embedded processors.
- Familiarity with time synchronization (IEEE 1588 PTP, GNSS PPS).
- Experience running ROS 2 or DDS on embedded targets.
- Knowledge of secure boot, system hardening, or cybersecurity requirements for defense systems.
- Eligibility to obtain a U.S. Secret or higher security clearance; an active clearance is not required.
- Experience with marine electronics standards (e.g., NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000) or harsh-environment systems.
- Background with uncrewed or autonomous vehicles.
Benefits
- Meaningful early-stage equity.
- Great health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Unlimited vacation.
