The Civil Construction Surveyor plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and precision of Fiore & Sons’ projects by conducting surveys, collecting data, and providing essential information to help guide the construction process. The Surveyor coordinates and performs land surveying scopes of work, including construction staking, boundary locations and topography for various types of projects. The Surveyor regularly participates in pre-survey planning meetings with Project Estimators, Project Managers, and other project representatives to assign and monitor surveying work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts topographic, boundary, and construction surveys using a variety of surveying equipment, such as total stations, GPS, and laser scanners.
  • Demonstrates a broad knowledge of field survey industry principles, practices and processes, including the ability to read and interpret civil construction project plans and specifications.
  • Sets up and operates surveying instruments to measure distances, elevations, angles, and other relevant data points accurately.
  • Maintains an updated set of plans with all revisions and clarifications noted.
  • Establishes control points, benchmarks, and reference lines to guide construction activities and ensure proper alignment and positioning.
  • Collaborates with project managers, engineers, architects, and construction teams to coordinate surveying activities and address any survey-related issues.
  • Interprets CAD files and other computer-generated plans, including building surfaces and subgrade surfaces.
  • Loads instruments for grade checker and GPS machines.
  • Marks stakes making optimal use of lasers and grade checking equipment, such as eye levels, lasers, GPS, etc., determines final elevations to set specifications, and sets grade on stakes.
  • Instructs and trains field personnel in survey and mapping methods, use of equipment, and field safety procedures.
  • Prepares survey drawings and descriptions utilizing Trimble Business Center and other related software packages as directed.
  • Maintains accurate records, field notes, and survey data, and prepares detailed reports documenting survey findings and measurements.
  • Prepares survey documents and computations associated with surveys to collect three-dimensional field data, locates and confirms all elevation call-outs and existing grades with Trimble GPS.
  • Develops build files for grade control equipment and maintains as-build project files.
  • Monitors construction progress and provides timely updates on surveying activities to support project scheduling and decision-making.
  • Protects and maintains equipment and company vehicles in accordance with company policies.
  • Stays current with advancements in surveying technology, tools, and techniques, and recommends improvements to enhance surveying processes and efficiency.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and procedures to promote a safe working environment for self and others on the construction site.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong working knowledge of land surveying equipment use with the ability to professionally operate drone and GPS equipment.
  • Advanced technical aptitude with the ability to interpret, create, teach, and upload surface design files, plan drawings, surveys, and other construction documents and the ability to provide job cost analysis, project information and related reports.
  • Significant mathematical aptitude with the ability to do moderate to advanced math equations, quantities, and computations and the ability to understand the project from existing conditions to design and completion.
  • Superior communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with internal and external customers on multiple platforms and at all levels while remaining professional, informative, and supportive.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex problems at a time while tracking progress and reporting regular status updates.
  • Highly organized with high attention to detail with the ability to work on multiple tasks and projects.
  • Ample knowledge of Trimble, Trimble Business Center and Bluebeam product-line and operation.
  • Ability to obtain Part 107 Drone Certification and maintain FAA waivers and safe flying practices as well as a desire to continue learning industry standards and practices.
  • Extremely self-motivated with the ability to take the lead on assignments as well as follow instructions and work within parameters of excellency established by leadership.
  • Ability to read and interpret data and systems, engineering drawings, contracts, blueprints and other construction documents.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with a solutions-oriented mindset, including the ability to think outside the box as well as the ability to learn new processes, procedures, and data quickly.
  • Good safety history and driving record and a willingness to engage and contribute to ongoing safe work practices, such as daily equipment inspections and reporting incidents, as well as strong knowledge of excavation, trenching and shoring safety standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Primary functions require the physical ability and mobility to work in and around construction sites and field assignments. Ability to carry survey equipment and supplies in remote, rural or urban surroundings and able to lift up to 50 pounds and walk long distances. Occasional bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry or push, and/or pull. Office environment in office setting or driving a vehicle.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Continually driving and visiting assigned projects with exposure to weather conditions as well as uneven terrain.
